About AWP

Animal Wellness & Performance is a veterinary sports medicine & rehabilitation clinic with a focus on agility dogs. We aim to improve handler education to ensure our sports dogs have long and healthy lives during and after their time in the sport. Dr Montana is a registered veterinarian with specialised qualifications, including being a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (University of Tennessee) and a Member of the Australia & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists - Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation (Canine). She also competes in the sport with her own Border Collies & Working Cocker Spaniels.

Sports Dog Initial Assessment

  • Suitable for dogs with no current known injury, looking to get an overall fitness review, conditioning plan and/or ongoing manual therapy with Dr Montana 

  • $100

Rehabilitation Initial Assessment

  • Suitable for dogs with a known injury - diagnosis does not need to be confirmed. Dr Montana will provide treatment as well as referral for further work up (eg xrays, ultrasound) as required

  • Includes treatment & an 8 week initial written rehabilitation plan with home exercises, management and pain management recommendations

  • $250

Written conditioning plan

  • Available following a Sports Dog Assessment. Includes a written ongoing plan for home exercises, including descriptions, repetition recommendations and progression options

  • $80

Treatment sessions

  • Available after the dog has had an Initial Sports Dog Assessment or Initial Rehabilitation Assessment. 

  • Includes massage, joint mobilisations and manipulations, myofascial release, stretching and other appropriate manual therapies

Brief assessment of dogs at agility trials following a concerning run

  • If your dog has an issue during a run (eg fall off dog walk, slip in tunnel, pulls up lame), Dr Montana is happy to assess your dog & advise whether follow on treatment is required

  • $50

Agility jump education sessions

  • Agility training sessions focussing on jump education - this may include exercises such as grids, single jump skills, cue proofing, handler mechanics and any other exercises that focuses on improving our agility dog’s foundation skills to enable higher difficulty courses without multiple repetitions of complex sequences

  • $80/hr - can be shared between multiple dogs

Conditioning sessions

  • Practical conditioning sessions including exercises such as platform work, cavalettis, dynamic fitness exercises and other relevant canine conditioning. We will focus on improving your mechanics to ensure your dog has the correct form when performing their exercises

  • Only available after the dog has had an Initial Sports Dog Assessment or Initial Rehabilitation Assessment. 

  • $80/hr - can be shared between multiple dogs

Seminars

Dr Montana will run seminars approximately once a month at various locations across Brisbane on a range of sports medicine and agility topics. Keep an eye on the AWP Facebook page for upcoming events

Getting to know Montana

Getting to know Montana

Dr Montana Mays is the owner and creator of Animal Wellness & Performance. AWP was born from Montana’s career as a veterinarian and her love of competing in agility with her own dogs. She wanted to combine these two passions so she underwent further specialisation qualifications in sports medicine & rehabilitation.

She gained her qualification through the University of Tennessee as a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) and completed her Memberships in Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation (Canine) through the Australia & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. 

She is also the proud owner of Tilly, Kosciusko, Marlu & Banksia, her border collies and working cocker spaniels that compete in agility and scentwork.
